I haven't added a new Clockwork Animal piece to the series since 2010, and not a brand new one since 2009. I usually have some type of a Japanese influence to the pieces, but this time chose to go with a Soviet theme. This is also the first time more than one version of the animal has been included in the same composition.
The technical approach to the illustration is different than in the past. Previously I would start with a graphite line art sketch, scan it, and then fully illustrate in Adobe Photoshop. This piece began as graphite sketches and continued into Copic Markers. From there I scanned and illustrated the marker pieces. This is the reason for the "sketchy" look to parts of the illustration in contrast to the previous pieces which look very "clean".
The substrate for the marker renderings wasn't traditional art marker paper or sketching paper. In his book Mechanika, Doug Chiang suggests a heavier-poundage, color, laser printer, paper. That's what I used.
